Ireland Ordered to Recoup €13 billion of Illegal Tax Benefits in Apple Case

On 30 August 2016, the European Commission (Commission) adopted a decision finding that Apple had been granted illegal State aid of up to €13 billion as a consequence of tax rulings issued by Ireland. The Commission has been investigating the tax ruling practices of EU Member States since June 2013 and this decision represents the third negative decision ordering the recovery of illegal State aid (following the decisions in Fiat and Starbucks in October 2015).
