Professor Newman is currently serving as Deputy Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition, where he oversees a variety of merger and technology-enforcement matters. He is on leave from the faculty of the University of Miami School of Law. Professor Newman’s scholarship primarily addresses antitrust law and policy, with a particular focus on the economics and regulation of digital markets and platforms. He has served on the advisory boards of the American Antitrust Institute and the Institute for Consumer Antitrust Studies, and as a fellow with the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale. He began his legal career as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division. During law school, he served as a research assistant to Professor Herb Hovenkamp.
