Liberty Macebo Mncube is a Tribunal Member at the Competition Tribunal of South Africa. At the Competition Tribunal, he adjudicates competition cases. He is also an Associate Professor of Economics at the School of Economics and Finance (University of Witwatersrand). Professor Mncube has received a Ph.D., in Economics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and an M.Sc., in Economics from the University of York. He is a former Managing Director at FTI Consulting. He is also a former Chief Economist of the Competition Commission of South Africa (Jan 2014 to Feb 2019). Professor Mncube is an expert in the application of economics to competition law and has provided expert economic testimony before the Competition Tribunal for the Competition Commission and private parties. His scholarship on competition economics and competition policy has been published in local and international journals. Professor Mncube is a Member of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC, appointed 1 October 2019). The PEAC is established to generate new ideas for economic growth, job creation and addressing poverty. Professor Mncube served as a member of Minister Ebrahim Patel’s Ministerial Advisory Panel tasked with developing draft amendments to the Competition Act which ultimately led to the Competition Amendment Act 18 of 2018.
